Burn rate का मतलब
Startup अगर महीने भर में जितना cash कमाता है उससे अधिक खर्च करता है तो उसका bank balance घट सकता है। उस net cash consumption को burn rate कहा जाता है। Gross burn सिर्फ खर्च पर केंद्रित calculation हो सकती है, जबकि net burn inflows घटाने के बाद का cash movement समझाती है। Revenue, accounting profit और bank cash flow एक ही नहीं हैं। इसलिए founders को monthly income statement के साथ actual bank movement देखना चाहिए।
Runway किसे कहते हैं
Runway यह अनुमान देता है कि वर्तमान usable cash और spend pattern पर business कितने महीने चल सकता है। सरल स्थिर अनुमान: available cash ÷ average monthly net burn। उदाहरण के लिए ₹12 लाख cash और ₹2 लाख monthly burn हो तो लगभग 6 महीने की runway निकलती है। लेकिन यह forecast है, calendar की guarantee नहीं। खर्च या collections बदलते ही वास्तविक runway बदल सकती है।
एक realistic example
मान लें startup का monthly operational outflow ₹5 लाख और customers से actual collections ₹2 लाख हैं। Rough net burn ₹3 लाख हुआ। बैंक में ₹18 लाख unrestricted funds हों तो सरल estimate 6 महीने है। मगर अगले महीने annual software fees, tax liability या unpaid invoices होने पर picture बदल सकती है। इसलिए one-month snapshot की जगह cash forecast और seasonality पर विचार करें। केवल booked sales को bank में मिली cash न मानें।
Profit और cash flow का फर्क
Invoice के आधार पर sales दर्ज हो सकती हैं, पर customer पैसे 60 दिन बाद दे। Accounting revenue अच्छी दिखेगा, जबकि salaries आज देनी होंगी। इसी तरह founder ने equipment में पैसा लगा दिया तो cash निकल गया, भले उस खर्च का accounting treatment अलग हो। Runway समझने के लिए bank cash position और payable commitments देखना आवश्यक है। Cash visibility कमजोर हो तो profitable company भी liquidity pressure में आ सकती है।
Runway का useful planning horizon
Investors या founders अक्सर next milestone और fundraising timeline के लिए runway देखते हैं। कितना समय पर्याप्त है, इसका universal नियम नहीं है। Industry, revenue stability, funding market और product stage अलग हैं। Team को worst-case तथा base-case दोनों scenarios बनाने चाहिए। Growth के उत्साह में इतना जल्दी hiring न करें कि product-market fit साबित होने से पहले cash खत्म होने लगे।
Burn कम करने के practical उपाय
हर खर्च हटाना सही लक्ष्य नहीं। पहले खर्चों को revenue-critical, product-critical और optional में बाँटें। Unused subscriptions, duplicate tools और low-impact campaigns घटाए जा सकते हैं। मगर ऐसे support या compliance functions काटना नुकसानदायक होगा जो business continuity बनाए रखते हैं। Customer acquisition spend को unit economics के साथ देखें। केवल सस्ती leads नहीं, paying customers और retention मायने रखते हैं।
Funding कब जरूरी हो सकता है
Raise करने की तैयारी केवल bank balance लगभग खत्म होने पर शुरू करना जोखिमपूर्ण हो सकता है। Investors traction, realistic projections, team और milestone use-of-funds समझना चाहते हैं। Startup India guidance भी funding need और milestone-based planning पर जोर देती है। Funding rounds समझने के साथ dilution, valuation और documentation cost भी समझें। निवेश मिलना तय नहीं है, इसलिए fallback operating plan रखें।

उपयोगी monthly update में opening cash, cash inflows, outflows, net burn, runway estimate, recurring revenue, major product milestones और risks दिखाएँ। Assumptions स्पष्ट रखें। यदि कोई month unusually high खर्च वाला था तो average burn भी report करें। Honest numbers investors और employees को वास्तविक निर्णय लेने में मदद देते हैं। Runway बढ़ा-चढ़ाकर दिखाने से business के लिए जरूरी correction देर से होगा।
Founder की 30-minute monthly checklist
Bank account और payment liabilities reconcile करें; पिछले तीन महीनों का average burn निकालें; आगामी committed expenses जोड़ें; realistic collections estimate करें; scenario-wise runway देखें; customer retention और sales pipeline verify करें; तथा अगले 30 दिनों के expense decisions पर action लें। नई product idea पर पैसा खर्च करने से पहले MVP से learning जल्दी हासिल करना उपयोगी हो सकता है।
